Canada Tax — Level 1

Thirty hours of slide-based instruction: the Canadian personal tax return end to end, and six client files prepared and reviewed start to finish, taught by a CPA with more than twenty years in practice and thousands of returns filed. This is the personal-tax foundation of the Canada Tax program; Canada Tax — Level 2 continues into corporate returns.

The CPA way of learning

Self-Study → Assess → Tutor → Practice → Simulation

Five stages, in order. You finish by preparing returns, not by watching them.

  1. STEP 01

    Self-Study

Bite-sized slide lessons you work through at your own pace, on your own schedule. Every topic stands alone, so you can go straight to the one you need and come back to it later as a refresher.

  2. STEP 02

    Assess your knowledge

Graded quizzes after each module tell you what actually landed. You do not move on because you paged through the slides; you move on because you can answer for it.

  3. STEP 03

    Live tutor session

Scheduled sessions with a practising accountant, over Zoom or Google Meet. This is where the things a slide deck cannot answer get answered, against your own questions and your own files.

  4. STEP 04

    Practical cases

Real client scenarios prepared end to end in real tax software. Slips, receipts, a messy set of facts and a return that has to balance — the work as it arrives on a desk, not as it appears in a textbook.

  5. STEP 05

Real customer simulation using agentic AI

A live interview with an AI client who only tells you what you think to ask, and who forgets, hedges and contradicts themselves the way real clients do. You conduct the intake, spot what is missing, and file on what you gathered.

How the course is taught

Everything here is built around one idea: you learn tax by preparing returns, not by reading about them. The instruction comes from a CPA with over twenty years in practice and thousands of completed returns behind them, so the examples are the situations that actually walk through the door, not the tidy ones invented for a textbook. Lessons are short and self-contained. Work straight through if you are starting from nothing, or go directly to the topic a client has just landed on your desk and come back to it whenever you need reminding. Within your intake you set the pace; there are no scheduled classes to keep up with. The material is updated every year to track changes in legislation and in the forms themselves.

Twenty per cent of the law covers eighty per cent of the returns

Canadian tax legislation is genuinely large, and that size is what puts most people off ever starting. It is also misleading. The overwhelming majority of Canadians have a straightforward tax situation. Employment income, a few slips, some credits, perhaps a rental property or a side business. Learn the part of the Act that governs those and you can prepare the great majority of returns you will ever be handed, confidently and without guessing. This course is organised around that reality. It spends its time on what comes up, in the order it comes up, and tells you plainly when a situation has passed the point where you should be taking it on alone.

Who This Course Is For

CPA and business students

If you are working towards the CPA designation, this fills the gap between what you are examined on and what you will be asked to do in your first week at a firm. The theory you are studying is not wrong, it is just not yet usable. This course makes it usable. You arrive able to pick up a set of files and work them without supervision, which is exactly the thing that gets noticed by the managers and partners around you.

Accountants moving into tax practice

If you already practise and you are considering adding tax preparation, or moving into it entirely, this is a structured refresher and a working reference in one. It is written by practising accountants for practising accountants, so it does not spend your time on ground you already hold. It gets you to the point of taking on returns for clients, and it tells you honestly where the limits of an introductory course are.

Bookkeepers

You already have your hands on your clients' numbers all year. You are usually the first to know when something has changed. What you may not have is your own T1 capability, which means year-end work, and the conversations that go with it, leave your hands. This course gives you the option: prepare those returns yourself, or at minimum hold your own with the accountant who does, and know precisely what is being decided and why.

Freelancers and self-employed filers

If you invoice clients directly, whether that is contract work, a side business, or freelancing full time, business income and expenses on the T2125 are covered in full: what counts as income, which expenses are deductible, mileage and home office claims, and capital cost allowance on the equipment you use to do the work. You do not need to hire a preparer to understand your own return. This course teaches the same material a preparer would use, so you can either file it yourself with confidence or know exactly what you are paying someone else to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the course start and finish?

It opens as soon as your enrollment is confirmed and runs until the end of the intake you chose. See the intakes on this page for dates. Within your intake the course is self-paced: there are no scheduled classes to attend, and you can go back to any lesson as often as you need.

How long do I have access?

Until your intake finishes, on any device you own. Each intake’s end date is shown on this page and when you choose your intake. When the intake finishes, access to the course ends.

How often is the course updated?

Every year, to keep pace with changing legislation, and again during the year whenever a budget introduces something that materially affects the content. Any update made while your intake is running is included at no extra cost.

Are there tests or assessments?

Yes. The course ends with a graded quiz and a practical case prepared in real tax software. Assessments are sat in Safe Exam Browser and the pass mark is 80%. This is deliberate: the certificate is meant to mean you can do the work, which requires that somebody checked.

Are there live tutor sessions? When do they run?

Yes. Alongside the self-paced lessons, we run live tutor sessions with our partners over Zoom or Google Meet on Saturdays, 6:00 to 9:00 AM Central Time (Winnipeg). The Live Tutor Sessions section on this page shows that time where you are, and lets you add the sessions to your calendar.

Does this cover corporate returns?

No, this is the personal-tax program: the T1 return and real-world case studies. Canada Tax — Level 2 continues straight into corporate returns (the T2, the small business deduction, and owner-manager remuneration) for anyone who wants both.

What if the course is not right for me?

Tell us within 14 days of buying and we will refund you in full, as long as you have completed no more than two lessons and have not attempted any quiz or assessment. Once the refund is processed, your access to the course ends.
