Add the sessions to my calendarChoosing a course
I am new to tax. Where do I start?
Start with Level 1 for the country whose returns you want to prepare. Neither Level 1 course assumes any prior tax knowledge.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2? Do I need Level 1 first?
Canada Tax — Level 1 covers the personal T1 return and six full case studies. Level 2 covers corporate tax: the T2, the small business deduction, associated corporations and salary-versus-dividend planning. US Tax — Level 1 takes you through a routine Form 1040. Level 2 covers investment income, Schedule C, Schedule E rentals and FBAR / Form 8938 through nine full returns. Level 1, or equivalent experience, is strongly recommended before Level 2.
Should I learn Canadian or US tax first?
Choose the country whose returns you expect to prepare. If you are aiming at a particular firm, ask which returns it handles. You can also take both through the Complete Program bundle.
What does Cross-Border Tax cover?
Canada–U.S. cross-border filing and the tax treaty: non-resident returns on both sides of the border, foreign tax credits in each country, T1135, the 1040-NR, selling property across the border, and the treaty positions that most often change a return. It is the advanced course, for people who already know the US Form 1040 and the Canadian T1 return.
Will this help with the Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA exams?
The courses teach practical return preparation rather than exam technique. The US individual-return content overlaps with much of EA Part 1, but the course does not follow any exam syllabus.
Studying with us
Do I need to live in Canada or the US?
No. Everything is online, so you can study from any country. Live tutor sessions run over Zoom or Google Meet, and this page shows their time where you are.
What language are the courses in?
All lessons, live sessions and assessments are in English.
Can I study only on weekends?
Yes. Lessons are self-paced within your intake, so you choose when to study, and the live tutor sessions run on Saturdays.
What computer do I need?
Lessons work in any modern browser. Graded assessments are sat in Safe Exam Browser, a free locked-down browser for Windows and Mac computers, so you need a Windows or Mac computer for those. Phones and Chromebooks cannot be used for assessments. The How It Works page lists everything you need and how to check your setup before your first assessment.
Assessments and certificate
How am I assessed?
Most lessons end with a short knowledge check that you can retake as often as you need; scoring 80% unlocks the next lesson. Graded assessments are sat in Safe Exam Browser, with a pass mark of 80%.
What does the certificate show?
Your name, the course and the date you completed it. Each certificate has its own verification page on this site, so an employer can check it is genuine.
Do the CPD hours count with my professional body?
Courses that carry CPD hours show the number on the course page, and your certificate records them. Whether they count depends on your own professional body’s rules, so please check with CPA Canada, ICAI, ACCA or your regulator.
Can I prepare returns professionally after this course?
The course gives you the skills; registration is separate. In Canada, preparers who file returns electronically for clients register with the CRA for EFILE. In the US, anyone paid to prepare returns needs a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS. Our certificate is not a licence to practise.
Fees and payment
Which currency will I be charged in?
Prices are shown in Canadian dollars, US dollars, Indian rupees or Pakistani rupees; use the currency selector to choose. When online payment opens, you will be charged the price shown, in the currency you chose. If your card is in a different currency, your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee.
Are there discounts?
Yes. Buying courses together as a bundle costs less than buying them one at a time: • Canada Tax Bundle: $509 USD instead of $598 USD bought separately • US Tax Bundle: $719 USD instead of $897 USD bought separately • Complete Program — All Courses: $1,119 USD instead of $1,495 USD bought separately
What is your refund policy?
Tell us within 14 days of buying and we will refund you in full, provided you have completed no more than two lessons and have not attempted any quiz or assessment. Once the refund is processed, your access ends. The Refund Policy page has the details.
