The CPA way of learning

Self-Study → Assess → Tutor → Practice → Simulation

Five stages, in order. You finish by preparing returns, not by watching them.

  1. STEP 01

    Self-Study

Bite-sized slide lessons you work through at your own pace, on your own schedule. Every topic stands alone, so you can go straight to the one you need and come back to it later as a refresher.

  2. STEP 02

    Assess your knowledge

Graded quizzes after each module tell you what actually landed. You do not move on because you paged through the slides; you move on because you can answer for it.

  3. STEP 03

    Live tutor session

Scheduled sessions with a practising accountant, over Zoom or Google Meet. This is where the things a slide deck cannot answer get answered, against your own questions and your own files.

  4. STEP 04

    Practical cases

Real client scenarios prepared end to end in real tax software. Slips, receipts, a messy set of facts and a return that has to balance — the work as it arrives on a desk, not as it appears in a textbook.

  5. STEP 05

Real customer simulation using agentic AI

A live interview with an AI client who only tells you what you think to ask, and who forgets, hedges and contradicts themselves the way real clients do. You conduct the intake, spot what is missing, and file on what you gathered.

How the course works

The course is a single path of lessons, and you always know the next step. 1. Open the lesson. It starts with a short review of the previous lesson, then works through its slide deck; the lecture notes underneath carry everything the presenter would say about each slide. 2. Mark the lesson complete. That unlocks its knowledge check: recall questions plus short fact patterns and calculations. 3. Score 80% or higher on the check. The explanations appear, including why the other options are wrong, and the next lesson unlocks. If you fall short, go back over the lesson and try again; there is no limit on retakes. 4. Do the lesson's Your turn task. Each one adds the next piece of the same household's 2025 return, so by the end you have built a whole return step by step. The course ends with a capstone: a different household's complete routine 2025 return that you prepare on your own and check against the answer guide. Your progress is saved as you go, so you can stop after any lesson and pick up exactly where you left off.

Level and outcome

Level: beginner to developing. By the end you can explain how a Form 1040 fits together and prepare a routine, uncomplicated federal individual return with guided practice. You can also recognize when a client's situation is beyond this course, such as sales of investments, self-employment, rental property or foreign accounts, and escalate it. What completing the course shows: that you can prepare a routine federal return (wages, interest and dividends, the standard deduction or itemizing, common adjustments and credits) with guidance. It does not show competence in more involved returns. Those are taught in US Tax — Level 2 and need supervised experience.

Tax year and course version

Course version 2026.1 teaches tax year 2025, the returns filed in 2026. Every lesson, worked example, case and knowledge check states its tax year and jurisdiction. Where an earlier year appears, it is labelled as historical and the lesson explains why it is there. Each lesson lists the official sources it relies on (the law itself, such as the Internal Revenue Code, the Income Tax Act and the Canada–U.S. tax treaty, and the IRS and CRA guidance that explains how it is applied) so you can open and check every rule yourself.

Choose your pace

Choose the intake length that fits you: a 2-week fast track or a 6-week pace with more room to absorb the material. Within your intake the course is entirely self-paced. Access ends when your intake finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do first?

Open the course from My Courses and start with the introduction and the orientation lesson, which walks through how lessons, knowledge checks and unlocking work. After that, follow the lessons in order: the next one opens as soon as you pass the knowledge check before it.

How do the knowledge checks work?

Each lesson is followed by a short check, usually two or three multiple-choice questions. Mark the lesson complete to open it, then score 80% or higher to unlock the next lesson. You can retake a check as many times as you need, and the explanations for every answer appear once you pass.

When can I start?

As soon as your enrollment is confirmed, the course opens in My Courses. See the intakes on this page for dates.

Does this cover state returns?

No. The course covers federal returns. State filing is a separate body of rules that varies by state; the course explains the risks state taxes pose, but does not teach state returns.

Does this cover investments, self-employment, rentals or cross-border returns?

Only far enough to recognize them and know when to escalate. The detailed lessons on investment sales and basis, Schedule C self-employment, Schedule E rentals and foreign account reporting (FBAR and Form 8938) are in US Tax — Level 2, alongside nine complete client case studies. Cross-Border Tax covers Canada–U.S. filing and the tax treaty.

Which tax year do the figures use?

Tax year 2025, the returns filed in 2026. Every lesson, worked example and knowledge check states its tax year, and each lesson lists the official IRS sources behind its figures. Amounts change every year, so the course is updated for each new filing season.

Do I need U.S. tax experience already?

No prior U.S. tax knowledge is assumed. You should be comfortable with accounting fundamentals (reading a set of books, understanding what an expense is), but the tax content starts from the beginning.

How long do I have access?

Until your intake finishes. Each intake’s end date is shown on this page and when you choose your intake. When the intake finishes, access to the course ends.
